Among my search for the best oxymoron
in the world, I've come across a
few good ones. Military intelligence and Microsoft works, to name
a
few. However, the best oxymoron I've come across so far is this
-
organized religion. Not only are the vast majority of religions
in this
world NOT organized, but they are founded upon principles so far
fetched, that if one was to attempt to found an organization upon
similar beliefs in this day and age, it would fail miserably.
Not only would it fail miserably, but
the sanity of the founder would
be in serious question. Take the incident a few years ago in Waco,
Texas for an example. David Koresh truly believed himself to be
a
spiritual leader, and that his cause was right. However, the nation,
as
a whole, didn't follow this belief. What makes David Koresh and
less
right than Jesus Christ? Both were spiritual leaders, talking
to a god
they called their "father," and both had a number of
followers at the
time of their deaths.
Yet today, Christ has a mass following,
calling themselves "Christians"
while Koresh goes virtually not remembered. Who is to say that
a few
millennium down the road, there won't be "Koreshians"?
Regardless of if
there are, or are not, one thing will remain the same. Organized
religion will still be a pipe dream, unattainable because of the
underlying belief that one religion is the ONLY true belief.
Look at today's Christians, they are
varied, and unorganized. You have
Baptists and Methodists, to name a few. Both have roots founded
by
Jesus Christ, yet both have split from each other to the point
that they
have fundamentally different beliefs. If you ask a Baptist to
consider
a Methodist's point of view, they will at least think, if not
state out
loud, that the Methodist is wrong, and that he, the Baptist, is
right.
The same goes if you ask a Methodist to consider a Baptist's point
of
view. From a similar beginning, two very different religious sects
have
grown.
Then there are those who follow another
path altogether, perhaps Hindu
or Buddhist. While the Baptist and the Methodist might disagree
on a
few point in their religious beliefs, these religions are entirely
different animals. Ask any Christian, regardless of the sect,
their
thoughts on people of other religions, and they will invariably
tell you
that those people are "wrong" and going to "hell."
They don't care that
these other people don't even BELIEVE in the concept of their
"hell" and
aren't worried in the LEAST about going there! To a Christian,
while
they might not accept fully the belief of another sect of Christianity,
they at least believe that the other sect has a decent idea of
what is
"right".
To make a long story short, organization
in religion is simply put, a
sham. When members of an organized religion aren't busy thinking
their
belief system is superior to another religion, they are engaged
in
constant infighting among varied sects of the OWN religion, arguing
over
the differing translations in a book a few thousand years old,
at the
least. Food for thought : the word commonly translated into "virgin"
in
the Christian Bible also has another meaning - "young unmarried
mother." Also, beyond translatory problems, these books were
written by
men, and if a similar book was attempted to be written today,
the author
would invariably be labeled "crazy" or a "lunatic."
